If you want to start a conversation with someone what will you speak? I have observed that generally conversation in English ends in first two minutes. In URDU/Hindi you can talk for hours. The problem you face in English is one of self-doubt that whether we will be able to speak in English or not.

Secondly, we think if we commit mistakes what might happen. So what if we commit mistakes; we will correct ourselves. We are going to tell you something & you have to mind it that when you speak in English you should be able to make this ice-breaking talk well. So, what I am going to do it is that I am going to run you through conversation between strangers.

That means when you want to start a conversation with someone you meet how will you start your conversation & how will you take you further. so, there are two important points- One- to start the conversation & secondly, to take it further. We will start from very basic sentences but we will also take you to level next. I will also explain you some concepts of English as well. Hope you like it.

Should we start? We have taken two characters. You can give yourself any name or your own name, You can also choose a partner. You can do it as role-play or you can do it as monologue. You take the role for both A & B. After all, we are learning English; we need to be smart. Here we go!

We have a gentleman named ‘A’ When he meets ‘B’ , how does ‘B’ respond? ‘A’ meets ‘B’ for the first time & says, “Hello”. Be will respond with a ‘Hi’. ‘Hello’. “How are you?” He can say anything. So, if somebody says you ‘hello’, first, answer his greetings. And the best way to respond to the greetings is You also respond by saying ‘hi’ or ‘hello’. You can also shake hands.

The second step is introducing yourself to him. The first thing you should do is making a beginning; try to do it. It will remove your hesitation. Tell him your name- “My name is Talha.” If I want to introduce myself, what will I say? “My name is Hasham khan.” But I will not stop here. I will speak further. After all, we need to talk long.

English Speaking

“What’s your name?”your sentence would be, ” My name is Talha . What’s your name?” And the reply from the other side can be anything. “My name is Sohail.” “My name is Anwer.” or whatever. You try to speak your name. Friends, when we speak , ” What is your name?” This is one way. But in spoken English try to use abbreviated form of ‘what is’ Speak ‘what’s’

What will we speak? What’s. So, one way is, ” what is your name?” And what’s another way is- “what’s your name?” And this looks good; this looks fabulous. Put some style into it. When you put style into something, it increases your confidence. Speak as you speak in Urdu/Hindi. So the reply was, ” My name is Anwer.” What is the third step after ‘hello’, introduction. Ask about the well being of the person.

“How are you Anwer?” Good if you can use his name as well. Otherwise, say, ” How are you?” If you are asked the same thing, what will you say? “I am fine.” And don’t stop here; put some courtesy- ” I am fine, thank you” Now you take the talk further. It is your responsibility too. So, when you say, ” I am fine, thank you”, add “Hey, what about you?” And as you speak this much, you will gain confidence.

English Grammer

This much you can practice, at least. Should we start from the beginning? What will Bhanu say? I am bad; I am not good. Ney! He will not say so,or, ” I am not well”. What will he reply,” I am fine.” And when you say, ” I am fine” Add one more word to it to make it more interesting & it’s quite easy. Speak, “I am fine too.”

Here too means, ” I am also fine.” If you are fine, I am fine too. You said, ” I am fine.” & I responded, ” I am fine too.” And speak this too with some style. We greeted each other & introduced ourselves. We inquired about each other’s well being. Now, let’s know about the person.

So, Mr Talha will ask you, “Hey, what do you do?” If you pay attention here, ‘do’ is appearing twice in this sentence. One ‘do’ before ‘you’ & another one after ‘you’. It’s quite simple- The ‘do’ which comes before the subject is helping verb The ‘do’ which comes after subject is main verb. So both ‘dos’ are place correctly. When someone asks you , ” what do you do”, he is asking about you.

English

and he is also asking about your profession. So, if you are a student, you will answer, ” I am a student.” If you are a businessman, you will reply, ” I am a businessman.” Did you get the point? So, when I say ” what do you do” and I replace you with he, what will I say, “What does he do?” So the change will be in helping verb. Main verb will remain the same. First form of ‘do’.

Did you get the point. The talk is between ‘A’ & ‘B’. ‘B’ has asked you, “what do you do?” What will ‘A’ reply, ” I study in class XI.” I study in class IX. One mistake that we generally commit is- when we want to say “I study in class IX.” we say, ” I am study in class IX.” This is a common mistake. Since childhood, we have studied, we use ‘am’ with ‘I’. but we should also know, where it is used.

We use ‘am’ with ‘I’ when we have either ‘ing’ form or we don’t have any action verb. For example, I am fine. Look at the first sentence. We have use ‘am’ with ‘I’. ‘Why?’ Because we don’t have any other verb. If I talk to you, I will say,” I am teaching you.” Why did I use ‘am’? Because there is ‘ing’ form after it. But in this sentence we will not use ‘am’.

There is a reason- because I have a verb and it is not ‘ing’ form of verb. That verb is called action verb. So, if I have action verb & it is not ‘ing’ form, I will never say, “I am study.” So, what will I say? I study in class XI. And since you have spoken so, I may ask you, We have to talk further. How would we have a long conversation? In which class do you study? He has not used ‘are’ here. ‘Do you study?’

This is present indefinite tense. When you are asked, “In which class do you study?” How would you answer? ‘I am study in class XI’. NO. We have just taught you. So, how would you respond? Speak. YES You will say,” I study in class XII.” Friends, if you want to learn English you will learn by listening to me or by gaining knowledge. How would you learn English? By speaking.

You will learn English by speaking. As I have given you this conversation, you need to take it further. You have to continue speaking. We will slowly improve your level of English. But I would give you a piece of advice, find a good partner and start speaking. Make a beginning from this point. When we introduce ourselves, what do we call it? We call it ‘Ice-breaking’. What do we say- Ice-breaking. Start with ice-breaking.
